An analysis of the 38 commonly eaten raw (as opposed to dried) fruits shows that the one with the highest calorific value is the avocado (Persea americana) with 741 calories per edible lb. That with the lowest value is cucumber with 73 calories per lb. Avocados probably originated in Central and South America and also contain vitamins A, C. and E and 2.2% protein.

A potato weighing 18 lb 4 oz was reported dug up by Thomas Seddal in his garden in Chester, England, on Feb 17, 1795. A yield was reported of 515 lb from a 2 1/2 lb parent seed by C. Bowcock of Willaston, England, planted in Apr 1977.

Radishes weighing 25 lb have been grown by Glen Tucker of Stanbury, South Australia, in Aug, 1974, and by Herbert Breslow of Ruskin, Fla, in 1977.

A squash weighing 513 lb was grown by Harold Fulp, Jr., at Ninevah, Ind, in 1977. Mike Jovanovich of LaPonte, Ind grew 1,851 lb of squash from one seed in 1979.

A 31-ft-6-in plant was grown in 1980 at the Chosen Hill School in Gloucester, England.

A turnip weighing 73 lb was reported in Dec 1768. In modern times the record is 35 lb 4 oz for a turnip grown by C. W. Butler of Nafferton. Humberside, England. A purple top turnip of 30 lb was grown by Denverd Fleming of Phil Campbell, Ala, in 1979.

A zucchini weighing 19.14 lb was grown in 1979 by Douglas Andre of Millington, Mich.
Largest Vines
The largest recorded grape vine was one planted in 1842 at Carpinteria. Calif. By 1900 it was yielding more than 9 tons of grapes in some years, and averaging 7 tons per year. It died in 1920.
