Supersonic Flight
The first supersonic flight was achieved Oct 14, 1947 by Capt later Brigadier General) Charles Chuck Elwood Yeager, USAF retired (b Feb 13, 1923). over Edwards Air Force Base. Muroc, Calif in a US Bell XS-1 rocket plane (Glamorous Glennis), with Mach 1.015 (670 mph) at an altitude of 42,000 ft.
Largest and Smallest Planes
The aircraft with the largest wing span ever constructed was Howard R. Hughes' H.2 Hercules flying boat, which rose 70 ft into the air in a test run of 1,000 yd off Long Beach Harbor, Calif on Nov 2, 1947. The 8-engined 213-ton aircraft had a wing span of 320 n and a length of 219 ft.It never flew again. The craft cost $40 million, and was piloted by Howard Hughes himself on its one run .It was not scrapped until Apr 1976.
The highest recorded gross takeoff weight of any aircraft has been 425 lons in the case of a Boeing 747-200B Jumbo plane during certification tests of its Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7Q engines on May 23, 1979.

The lightest mechanically powered plane ever flown was the prototype Birdman TL-1. a single-seat monoplane designed and built by Emmet M. Tally III of Daytona Beach, Fla and first flown on Jan 25, 1975. As marketed in kit form it has a wing span of 34 ft, a weight of 122 lb empty, and normal takeoff weight of 288 lb. It is powered by an 11.5 hp McCulloch MC-101 DT single-cylinder 2-stroke engine driving a pusher propeller, has a maximum speed of 50 mph and a range of 168 miles on 4 gallons of fuel. The pilot sits on an exposed seat.
The lightest and smallest twin-engine airplane is the MC10 Cricrisingle seat monoplane designed and built by Michel Colomban or Rueil Malmaison, France, and first flown as a prototype on July 19, 1973 by 68-years old Robert Buisson. It has a wing span of 16 ft 3/4 in, an empty weight of 154 Ib, a takeoff weight (including the pilot) of 375 Ib Two 10 hp Valmet SM 160J single-cylinder 2-stroke engines give it a mai mum speed of 136 mph and a range of 496 miles. The Cricri is aerobatic. The smallest airplane ever flown is the Stits Sky Baby biplane, designed and built by Ray Stits at Riverside, Calif and first flown by Robert H. Starr May 26, 1952. It was 9 ft 10 in long, with a wing span of 7 ft 2 in, and weighed 452 lb empty Powered by an 85-hp Continental C85 engine, it reaches a top speed of 185 mph.
Heaviest and Fastest Bombers
The heaviest bomber is the 8-jet swept wing Boeing B-52H Stratofortress, which has a maximum takeoff weight of 488,000 lb. It has a wing span of 185 ft and is 157 ft 6 3/4 in in length, with a speed of over 650 mph. The B-52 can carry 12 SRAM thermonuclear short-range attack missiles or 24 750-lb bombs under its wings and 8 more SRAMs or 84 500-lb bombs in the fuselage .
The 10-engined Convair B-36J, weighing 205 tons, has a greater wing span, at 230 ft, but is no longer in service. It had a top speed of 435 mph. The fastest operational bombers are the French Dassault Mirage iv, which can fly at Mach 22 (1,450 mph) at 36.000 the General Dynamje FB-HITA, with a maximum speed of Mach 2.5; and the Soviet swingwing Tupolev Tu-26 known to NATO as Backfire," which has an estimated over-target speed of Mach 2.0 and a combat radius of 3,570 miles.
Airliners
The highest capacity jet airliner is the Boeing 747, "Jumbo Jet." first down on Feb 9, 1969. It has a capacity of from 385 to 500 passengers with a maximum speed of 608 mph. Its wing span is 1957 and its length 2313 lt entered service on Jan 22, 1970.
The fastest airliner is probably the USSR's Tu-144, which first flew on Dec 31, 1968, and began passenger operations between Moscow and Alma-Ata (2,190 miles) on Nov 1, 1977, offering an average speed of 1,245 mph (March 19). It has a capacity of 140 passengers and is able to attain 1,585 mph.
The supersonic BAC/Aerospatiale Concorde, first Born on March 2, 1969, with a capacity of 128 passengers, cruises at up to Mach 2.2 (1,450 motu lewat Mach 1.05 on Oct 10, 1969, exceeded Mach 2 for the first time on Nov 4, 1970, and became the first supersonic airliner used for Passenger service on Jan 21, 1976, when Air France and British Airways opened service simultaneously between, respectively, Paris Rio de J neuro and London-Bahrain. Services between London/NY and Paris/NY began Nov 22, 1977. The NY-London record time is 2 hours 39 min 14 sec (average 1,166.031 mph) set Jan 20, 1980.
